Premarin Weight Gain
and Weight Loss with Diet and Progesterone Cream.
The jury may be out on the issue of weight gain while on
synthetic hormone replacement menopause medications (HRT) like Premarin.
There almost are as many opinions out there as there are doctors
treating menopause and weight gain.
While some women report rapid weight gains of 15 to 30 pounds in periods
as short as 2 weeks from the start of taking Premarin, one large study
concluded that Premarin weight gain amounted to only about 1 pound over
a long time period.
For some reason unknown to researchers, weight gain tends to occur in
women during and after menopause whether they choose hormone replacement
therapy medications (HRT) or not. According to the Postmenopausal
Estrogen and Progestin Intervention (PEPI) Trial, women placed on a
placebo gained an average of 4.6 pounds while women taking estrogen of
the type found in Premarin and Prempro gained only 1.5 pounds. The trial
lasted three years. (J CLIN
Endocrinology Metab. 1997; 82: 1549-1556.)
Yet, nationally televised Dr. Helen Pensanti, M.D. reports that the
women she sees in her practice who are placed on synthetic hormone
replacement menopause medications (HRT) like Premarin gain an average of
20-30 lbs. She notes that the Premarin weight gain is primarily around
the middle, hips and thighs - a finding also suggested in the large
study.
The late diet guru, Dr. Robert Adkins said, "One of the greatest
obstacles to weight loss is the use of hormones such as estrogen and
synthetic progesterone prescribed for relief of menopausal symptoms in
women. To achieve significant weight loss, women must eliminate these
hormone replacements or cut way down on them, but doing so usually
causes unacceptable symptoms. That's where complementary medicine comes
in. Vita nutrients such as prescription doses of
folic acid, plus boron, pregnenolone, DHEA and GLA, must be prescribed
in addition to natural progesterone from a compounding pharmacy. Since
the dose of each nutrient or hormone must be tailored to a woman's own
hormone levels, this approach requires an experienced complementary
physician. But it does allow for weight loss."

compounding pharmacy, our all natural independent lab tested
Preserve USP progesterone cream along with the saliva testing kit will
produce similar results. Read more on

According to Dr. John Lee, M.D., an internationally acknowledged pioneer
and expert in the study and use of natural progesterone, progesterone is
needed in hormone replacement therapy, because while estrogen levels
drop 40% to 60% during menopause, progesterone levels may drop to near
zero in some women. This causes what he calls "estrogen dominance."
A sign of estrogen dominance is weight gain caused by both water
retention and fat deposited at the hips and thighs says Dr. Lee. He
concludes that middle age spread could stem from the dual effect of
synthetic estrogen (prescribed alone) and the rapid drop in progesterone
levels that accompany menopause.
His preferred remedy, as well as ours, is topically applied progesterone
like our Preserve USP progesterone cream. Preserve progesterone cream is the
best all natural USP progesterone cream you can buy.
(On a personal note, weight gain was a persistent
problem for me since entering the menopausal years. No diet seemed to
work for long until I ran into Ann Louise Gittleman's book, The Fat
Flush Plan. The basic premise of her book is that a toxic liver will
sabotage most, if not all, weight loss efforts. The liver flush did
wonders for me - another persuasive argument for progesterone cream.
Since all medications are processed by the liver adding to its toxicity,
topically applied or transdermal progesterone is absorbed directly
through the skin bypassing the liver. - Merilou)
